Cascina CaRossa Nebbiolo

The color is light ruby red. Complex and fruity on the nose with delicate notes of rose and violet. Well-structured, fat, robust, and slightly tannic on the palate Food Pairings: Raw meat appetizers like the tartare or carpaccio, and ripe cheese.

"The Langhe Nebbiolo is an attractive, plump Nebbiolo best suited to near-term drinking. There is a juiciness and spiciness to the fruit I find highly appealing."

  • G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole -- "The 2005 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is insanely beautiful. A sweet, inviting bouquet leads to roses, cherries, raspberries, flowers and spices. The wine possesses gorgeous inner perfume and wonderful depth as it hovers on the palate with a Burgundian sense of weightlessness. This is an emotionally moving, delicate wine of the highest level. The 2005 Bricco delle Viole is quite approachable today, but it is likely to close down a bit in bottle, so readers will want to taste it upon release and then forget about any remaining bottles for a while. There is purity to the fruit that recalls Giacomo Conterno's Barolo Cascina Francia without that wine's heft. In 2005 the growing season was a bit warmer than in 2004, and this high-altitude vineyard is one of a handful of sites that did better in 2005 than in 2004. Simply put, this is a marvelous bottle of Barolo!" -Wine Advocate "Dried berries and sweet plum on the nose, with hints of clove. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and berry and Indian spice notes, followed by a medium finish. Closed now. Needs time to develop. 900 cases made." -Wine Spectator

  • Roagna Barolo Vigna Rionda -- "The 2003 Barolo Vigna Rionda is the newest addition to the estate's line-up. Barolo lovers are well aware that Vigna Rionda is one of the most legendary sites in wine, so a new label is sure to elicit a high level of interest. Roagna's Vigna Rionda is made from the oldest and most historic part of the hill, the same plots that were the source of the most legendary Riondas made in the past. Roagna's 2003 Barolo Vigna Rionda opens with the essence of rose petals followed by gorgeous layers of red cherries, baking spices, cocoa, leather, menthol and licorice. At once delicate and powerful, it captures the essence of this famed site with remarkable elegance considering the less-than-ideal quality of the vintage. The 2003 Rionda saw a shorter period of oak aging than is typical for the estate's other Barolos and I can't help thinking that has helped maintain an additional level of vibrancy here. This is a promising Barolo, and it will be fascinating to see what Roagna can do in less extreme vintages. For now, it is an auspicious debut. Barolo is never inexpensive, but this wine offers superb value for the money."-Wine Advocate

  • Vietti Barolo Castiglione -- "The 2006 Barolo Castiglione is frighteningly outstanding, considering it is Vietti's entry-level Barolo! There is incredible density and power in the glass as waves of fruit caress the palate with tons of richness. Sweet menthol, flowers and spices add complexity to the long, stupendous finish. In 2006 the Barolo Castiglione is a blend of fruit from Bricco Fiasco (except for the lower part of that plot), Ravera, Fossati and Bricco Ravera. All of the estate's Barolo-designated vineyards that weren't bottled separately were used for that vintage's Perbacco, a selection process I wrote about extensively in my recent profile on Vietti on The Barolo Castiglione is usually approachable pretty much upon release, but in 2006 the wine has so much fatness it will probably benefit from a few years in bottle. Barolo is never inexpensive, but the Castiglione is as good a wine as readers will find for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026." -Wine Advocate
